The Love Me Nots - In Black and White (2007)

Like a 60s spy-movie theme blasting through an aluminum-siding-covered one-car garage, The Love Me Nots do fuzzy, farfisa-drenched rock like it's 1963 again. The Love Me Nots' 2007 debut album In Black & White (Atomic A Go Go Records), produced by Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Romantics), went to the CMJ Top 100 within a week of its release. XM Radio listed it in XMU's Top 25 Albums of 2007, SPIN featured it in "Songs You Need to Download Now," The Boston Globe called LMN "one of six acts to watch in 07," and the album received national airplay and critical acclaim.
Mai - Still Need a Kiss (2007)

Graceful and riveting, dreamy and sensuous, MAI’s (Johanna Wedin) music is an invitation to the mesmerizing musical world drawn by Johanna Wedin. With the help of a few like-minded artists and producers such as Fred Fortuny, Dorian Dumont (The Teenagers) and Bardi Johannson of Lady and Bird / Bang Gang. MAI’s delicate intricacies and emotional power are crafted with Johanna’s dreamlike inflected Folk and Pop music. Johanna set out on a musical journey taking her first from her native Sweden to New York and then to Paris, drawing the attention and earning the respect of many a gifted producer and musician ultimately giving us the debut “Still Need A Kiss”. On her return to Paris in 2003, Johanna made the acquaintance of the French musician and then music journalist Dorian Dumont. Out of a mutual love for music, and a mutual willingness to write songs in the same mood. Johanna and Dorian both took on songwriting duties, blending Johanna’s love for dreamy though slightly tormented soundscapes and Dorian’s pop leanings. Interweaving folk and organic influences, as can be heard on MAI’s debut album «Still Need A Kiss» with the dream-pop notion; meanwhile giving Johanna the opportunity to allow her wonderful lush voice shine through the songs. Johanna issued a critically acclaimed 7’’ entitled «Snowing Downtown», which has earned MAI comparisons to both Jullee Cruise and Mazzy Star. Also the live performances, made for an intense and emotional experience, earning opening act slots for such bands as Grizzly Bear and Teitur or even A Camp. In the beginning of 2008 MAI started making demos for a new album, which lead to a trip to the French alpes where she, with the help of Fred Fortuny, produced her second album, surrounding herself with talented musicians like Andreas Söderström from Sweden, Samy Osta (Domingo), and Raphael Seguinier (Drummer in Cocoon). On this second album MAI wanted to explore more instruments and real-life sounds instead of electronic programming. One can still find old school drum machines on a few songs and some electronica, but most present in this album are Folk guitars, violins, percussion and drums and also many more instruments used in more unconventional ways. In addition to this Johanna’s singing is much more present and very close to the listener without artificial effects, such as most voice recordings on « Still Need A Kiss ». This album will first of all become a much more personal album of Johanna Wedin (MAI).
Sune Rose Wagner (2008)

Little did we know, as one half of the Raveonettes stays home with her baby, the other has been busy recording a brand new solo album. Earlier this week, the band’s male half, Sune Rose Wagner, sneaked one past us and dropped a whole album of new solo material, which is already up for grabs. The ten-track Wagner affair is simply being filed under his own name and is self-titled. It also comes sporting that similar hazy Spector rock sound of the Raveonettes, but now with all the lyrics delivered in his native Danish. This is definitely a good thing. In other the Raveonettes news, as previously reported, the duo recently released the new digital-only holiday offering Wishing You a Rave Christmas, which, like Sune Rose Wagner’s Juvenile Delinquent-released solo effort, is available at most online music retailers.
The Sunday Reeds - Drowning In History (2009)

The Sunday Reeds are a female-fronted noise pop/rock band named after Melbourne patron of the arts Sunday Reed. The love-child of some kind of rock 'n' roll orgy between The Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, The Ramones and The Velvet Underground. Driving bass lines, plenty of guitar feedback, primitive pounding rock beats and alto, sex-laden female vocals. If Nico had joined The Ramones, strapped on a bass guitar, and a whole lot more noise was added, this is how it might have sounded. Some facts about The Sunday Reeds: Founding members Romana Ashton and Drew Jones met at a university music course in Rockhampton, Queensland. They both dropped out of the course. Romana named the band after reading Janine Burke's biographies of Joy Hester and Sunday Reed. Sunday Reed had a triangular love affair with her husband John Reed and Australian artist Sidney Nolan for a number of years. She, according to some sources, committed suicide in 1981 not long after the death of her husband. The Sunday Reeds' debut album 'Drowning in History' is out now through Squirrel Records and also available from amazon.com and cargorecords.co.uk
Marie Fisker - Ghost of Love (2009)

Marie Fisker comes from Copenhagen, Denmark. Her lo-fi-vintage music is a blend of blues, country and rock. A bitter sweet almost David Lynch alike imaginary expression. Marie has kept instrumentation simple but very effective; everything’s carefully slotted in its place to just punctuate and enhance her silky, sultry voice.

Uni and Her Ukelele - I'm on My Way (EP 2007)

Seven months ago, Heather Marie Ellison started a monthly event at Space Gallery called Club Unicornbread. It's a variety show that has included burlesque acts, solo performers, comedians, performance artists and more.
"I thought the place had so much potential," Ellison says. "It has two floors, it's not a huge space, but you can kind of create an illusion with it. I felt connected to it."
Ellison is known as Uni from her solo act, Uni and Her Ukelele. (Ellison uses the British spelling "ukelele" for her solo project.) She performs her songs in the window at the front of the gallery.
"I like to play in the window," Ellison says. "I can have my singer-songwriter friends start off the night in the window, where it's kind of chill and people are coming in and getting their drinks, and then we can take it upstairs and do whatever we want."
It's encouraged to bring roller skates because near the end of the night, the party kicks into high gear and the upstairs turns into an impromptu roller rink. "We don't pass judgment" if you bring in-line skates, she says. But skates aren't required, as most of the crowd is consumed by the dance party.
Ellison started her career singing backup for Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Johnny Otis. She started Uni and Her Ukelele three years ago.
"I wanted instant gratification, and I couldn't get it because I'd been a singer in bands for the last 15 years, and to go and try to learn an instrument and be horrible at it when all you want to do is sing is really hard. I was failing miserably at the guitar, and when I got the ukulele, it's way easier to pick up," Ellison says. "I was singing songs right away and writing songs."
"Most people think you can just play Hawaiian songs, but you don't have to. You can play any song on the uke," Ellison says. "And I'm self-taught. It's not like it's a really difficult instrument."
The songs of Uni and Her Ukelele are feel-good pop anthems, perfect for setting the tone to start Club Unicornbread into the happy celebration that Ellison envisions. Her EP, "My Favorite Letter Is U," is available at Amoeba and online.
Tonight at Club Unicornbread, Uni and Her Ukelele and other singer-songwriters will start the party downstairs. Upstairs will be auditions for the Miss Unicornbread Pageant. "After the auditions, we're going to have a crazy dance party and celebrate the good times," Ellison says.

Coeur de Pirate (2008)

The debut album of an 18 years old Quebec-based musician Béatrice Martin delivers a collection of colourful and charming piano-driven pop songs. As the album ranges from melancholic notes to playful tones, the standout track “Comme Des Enfants” carries sincere joyfulness, sweet vocals, whimsical piano, organ and string arrangements. Equally enjoyable “C’était Salement Romantique” offers lovely organic nuances and a delicate instrumentation of the finest kind.

Kooqla - Paranormal (2009)

The intelligence music bohemia had lost an idea what to do with its farfetched talents. Every music project makes a breakthrough and is called an invention of the century.
Everyone had started to sing—wives, daughters, animation heroes and even panties. Sometimes, it seems that manatees write songs for this artists. We are proud to make you happier. These artists' time is near to its end. They're stepping back, and new heroes are replacing them. Street vendors are coming back to their streets.
KOOQLA is the new time music blockbuster.
The project was inspired by the Muse doll created by the well-known mooqla designer Polina Voloshina. Nata Zhyzhchenko, Tomato Jaws vocalist, became a voice of the project. Artem Harchenko (DJ R-Tem), famous musician, became a music producer.
Taking it seriously, musicians came to the KOOQLA project either as an alternative to their own works, neither as an another branch of their evolution. The authors were tired of the club music. "No wonder if you working with it for nine years! -- R-Tem says. -- That's why we decided to create something fine, intelligent, mature, audible — music for ears."
"We want your legs to rest — listen to us with your ears."

Cryptacize - Dig THat Treasure (2008)

Cryptacize began across the street from the C&H Sugar Factory in Crockett, CA, where Nedelle Torrisi and Chris Cohen lived in an apartment slightly tilted. There, constant dizziness and the smell of burning sugar became a permanent part of their psyches. One morning while brushing their teeth, toothpaste running sideways out of their mouths, Nedelle pronounced the word 'Cryptacize' and things were never the same. Seemingly, the house now inclined in the opposite direction! Soon after this, they discovered something even stranger - a video of a drummer named Michael Carreira playing his cowbell. Having only this video, they sought him out and convinced him to join their band and shortly there after began working on their first album.Every song on Dig That Treasure is a miniature journey, a free fantasia, a dreamy habitat built out of the minimum of material. Sudden rhythmic gestures and frequent key changes will leave you feeling pleasantly disorientated in a song. But trust your tour-guides! You might feel as if you've come across a small tribe that speaks an unstudied language, and miraculously, find that you can speak it too! Performing live, Nedelle, Mike and Chris watch each other intently, moving in an intuitive way to an unheard pulse, bringing their delicately constructed songs to new life.Dig That Treasure is humbly inspired by the larger-than-life emotions of West Side Story, the joyfully percussive guitar gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Wizard of Oz's bittersweet escapism, the other-world sentimentality of Sun Ra's Spaceship Lullaby, and Henry Cowell's ethereal piano string strumming.

The Rayographs (EP 2009)

The Rayographs are a UK trio. At first listen they're reminiscent of Grace Slick working with the Breeders, but they tap into a dark psychedelia that's quite different than the sounds created by the sisters Deal. A closer approximation would be a piano-free White Magic. It's lame to affix a bunch of female comparisons to an all-female band, but the comparisons fit (as does a mention of Patti Smith, sorry). To move beyond that, though, and deeper into the Rayographs themselves, the band's made up of guitarist/vocalist Astrud Steehouder, bassist/vocalist Jessamine Tierney, and drummer/sometime vocalist Amy Hurst. The three create a dark, intense, rollicking sound, but the real hook is Steehouder's voice. It's where the Grace Slick comparison comes into play.

Sargasso Trio - Burnin' Burnin' Burnin' (2008)

This is sargasso trio. The united sound of three songwriters; emily siddall, pete murdoch and ben winn. They first met in 2002, playing samba. From this they fell into writing acoustic synth-folk, latin lovesongs, odes to the road and ballads of the sea. On any given song they might play guitars, drums, keyboards, samples or saucepans, bottles or customised rhythm shoes. and they bind this all with a love of vocal harmony. Pete Murdoch's approach to the guitar comes from a love of the independent, the unusual and dark. His songs are modern life, country lament and local myth rewritten. Emily Siddall's old four track demos were the spark that started the heart of the band; her songs are lustful and lonely, or like calypso come-ons with words sharp as voodoo pins. Ben Winn, originally a drummer, creates a kind of synthesised soul sung by the silent type; jaded and fragile or uncompromising and unusual. As a live band, they continue this multi-instrumental approach and through this bring these diverse styles together. Their debut album Burnin' Burnin' Burnin' is out now on Boyscout Recordings.
Tagaq - Auk Blood (2008)

Primal, erotic, experimental, Tanya Tagaq is hailed as the "Jimi Hendrix of Inuit throat singing" (David Harrington, Kronos Quartet) and "like Edith Piaf or something, totally emotional" (Bjork). Her innovative, solo style of throat singing pushes the boundaries of emotion and expresses the primitive instincts that still reside deep within our flesh.
